Simon’s Cat – a viral media success

simons catAnyone who knows us also knows we share our living/working space with 3 cats.Ā  So the phenomenon of Simon’s Cat through viral media channels is no surprise to us and is actually a delight that we can relate it, somewhat spuriously I agree, to our working life in that social media played a huge part if not the main reason for it’s success.Ā

To view one of the hugely popular short films on YouTube then have a look hereĀ and hopefully you caught the interview with the real Simon on BBC breakfast this morning.Ā  Just shows the power of social media, viral distribution and the power of the Internet – as if we didn’t know that already!

And to be honest, if you don’t ‘get’ Simon’s Cat then you are clearly neither a cat owner or lover as these films capture completely what it is like living with our furry friends.Ā  And for dog lovers there is one short film about an overstuffed dog produced for the RSPCA which is also well worth a watch.

Google Video Search – important changes that will effect search rankings

Google video search filterGoogle’s recent ’show options’ addition to the SERP’s have provided additional search filters and I would like to continue this series of posts by looking at video.

Google Video Search Filter

We all know about YouTube, Google’s video sharing website, where users can upload and share video content.Ā  Since Google aquired YouTube in Nov 2006, it has fast become an internet phenomina in it’s own right and I recent read that it is the second most used search resource.

Google’s video filter option reinforces the value Google places on the ‘improved user experience’ and highlights the power of video to inform as well as entertain – something that text based content cannot do.

By using the video filter link,Ā video based results are listed that best matchĀ the search query, including mini screenshots in the search results. The userĀ then has further options that allow theĀ results to be filtered by length, most recently upload etc.

SEO Actions – Utilising Video Search

  • Create topical, market related video
  • Ensure videos are of appropriate length and meet other upload criteria
  • Ensure that videos are optimised for search
  • Post videos to YouTube and other video search sitesĀ
  • Post regularly, include interesting new video content
